　

第1部　絵はがきで切り取られた「記念」

		プロローグ　Prologue
	日本における手紙の長い歴史の中で、明治8（1875）年に「はがき」が誕生するまで、手紙の中身は書いた人と受け取った人との秘密でした。　はがきは、ただの1枚の紙にすぎません。受け取る相手に対する、むき出しのメッセージです。あらかじめ、だれかに読まれてしまうことを前提とした、これまでにない、新しい通信の形式です。このはがきの裏に、写真や絵などがあらかじめ印刷されているのが絵はがきです。　明治33（1900）年に誕生した「絵はがき」を、「記念」という切り口で整理し、絵はがきの歴史やその役割の移り変わりについて紹介します。

	In the long history of written communication in Japan, the contents of a message were private matters between the writer and the recipient until the birth of postcards in 1875. A postcard is nothing more than a single sheet of paper and its message to the recipient is open, by nature. This represented a new and unprecedented form of communication where the assumption was that the contents of the messages would no longer be private. A picture postcard has a photograph or drawing printed in advance on one side of it. In this exhibition, we will explore the history of picture postcards and the shift in the roles that they have played in commemoration and as mementoes since their first issue in 1900.
