官製絵はがき第一号は「記念絵はがき」 The first government-issued picture postcards: the first commemorative picture postcards |

近代日本の郵便制度は明治4（1891）年にはじまり、同6（1873）年に「官製はがき」が誕生します。最初のはがきは、二つ折りになったものでしたが、明治8（1875）年に現在のはがきの形になります。 明治33（1900）年9月に私製はがきの使用が認められるようになります。業者は、はがき大の紙（約90mm×約140mm）に絵や写真を刷り「絵はがき」として販売しはじめます。 逓信省は、明治35（1902）年に初の官製絵はがきを発行します。万国郵便連合（UPU）加盟25周年を記念したものです。6種類1組、5銭で販売されました。郵便にゆかりの深い施設が描かれています。フランス語があしらわれた、異国情緒が漂うデザインです。 |

| The modern Japanese postal system began in 1871 and the first postcards, which were folded in half, were issued by the government in 1873. The folding type of cards were replaced by the more familiar single-sheet form of postcards in 1875. In September 1900, when private production of postcards was approved, non-governmental publishers and printing firms started to sell single sheets of paper (approximately 90 mm x 140 mm), a slightly larger size than that of current postcards, with a photograph or drawing printed on one side of it as a postcard. The Ministry of Communications issued, in 1902, its first commemorative picture postcards, which marked the 25th anniversary of Japan’s membership of l’Union Postale Universelle (the General Postal Union). They were put on sale for 5 sen (an old unit of currency) for a set of 6 designs. Institutions closely associated with the postal service were depicted with French descriptions on each postcard giving the hint of an exotic atmosphere. | |||
