This exhibition has focused on postcards that commemorated public events or which were mementoes of private journeys. The role of picture postcards as a medium to mark such events as the Great Kanto Earthquake has been replaced in more recent times by television and nowadays by social network services (SNS). As mementoes of trips, picture postcards in the past were more or less the Twitter and Instagram of today, sent to friends or the tourists themselves using only a few words alongside a postmark of the travel destination. Now that many of these functions of postcards appear to have been succeeded by modern forms of communication, how about taking a fresh look at the analogue aspects of postcards and sending one to your friend or to yourself instead of posting on the SNS? You may be surprised at what you find.
